Appetizers from All Over

People enjoy appetizers all around the world. Some cuisines actually make appetizers into an art form to be enjoyed as an entire meal. Lucky for us, we can enjoy the flavors of the world in appetizer form. You can even do fusion appetizers and combine cuisines. Just use your imagination.

Chinese appetizers are known as dim sum. This name covers a wide range of small dishes. In some restaurants, you can order dim sum and choose the ones you want from a cart that is pushed about the restaurant by the wait staff. You can learn to make dim sum yourself or hire a caterer if you want it at a party. Sushi is a Japanese version that can be served as appetizers. Each piece can be eaten in one or two bites. Indian satay and other foods also make great appetizers. Indian food can be made with seafood, poultry, or spicy vegetables.

You may have tried antipasto in an Italian restaurant. Antipasto means “before the meal.” Also known as antipasti, it is usually made of dried meats, cheeses, sun dried tomatoes or salads. You could also serve up slices of bread that can be dipped in fresh olive oil or you can set a bowl of delicious seasoned olives on the table.

In Spain, appetizers are served almost everywhere. Known as tapas, these delicious appetizers are made of olives, cheeses, cured meats and many other delicious ingredients. Restaurants known as tapas bars are everywhere. The story goes that King Alfonso X invented tapas after he had to nibble food while drinking wine between meals when he was convalescing. He decreed afterward that all establishments serving wine must also serve food to prevent drunkenness.

Appetizers have many names in different countries. The UK calls them starters. France calls them canaps, amuse-bouche, or hors d’oeuvres. In Sweden, appetizers make up the smorgasbord. You may find appetizers made of salmon, herring or eel as well as butter, cheese and bread. The tradition in Sweden is to eat cold foods, and then alternate with hot foods until the meal is done.

Greek and Middle Eastern appetizers are known as “meze.” Many are deep-fried and served with creamy dips made from fresh yogurt. In South and Central America, you can find seafood in many appetizers. Shrimp is often used, as it is already bite sized and delicious. Tortillas are also very popular, especially with dip. In the Caribbean, coconut chips are a common appetizer.

When you are choosing appetizers to serve, you can look through recipes from all over the world. Many are very easy appetizers to make. Why spend the entire party in the kitchen when you can enjoy yourself? You can even use appetizers as the sole source of food at your party.

Using recipes from many different cuisines allows you to use your favorite ingredients for your appetizers. You will find that preparation is practically stress free and you can enjoy your own party. Your guests will love trying foods from all over the world one bite at a time.

Seafood appetizers can be made with crab, lobster, shrimp or fish. There are many things you can do with these versatile ingredients from the most simple to very complex. Seafood is a popular choice for appetizers. Everyone loves them and they are usually the first items to run out.
