Can You Get Normal Coffee From a Posh Coffeeshop?
Coffee has exploded in popularity over the last 10 years, and now over a billion cups of coffee are enjoyed around the world every day. It is no wonder then that coffeeshops have started to sprout up all over the place, and they have designed all different types of coffee to entice people in, but now it is getting hard to find our old favourites in the huge menus! If you don’t want to end up with some evil concoction with bananas in and all sorts, then you can always rely on these four types to satisfy your coffee cravings:
Normal coffee: This is just unadulterated real coffee, the way it has been made since it was first discovered. You can get machines to help you make a big pot of coffee, or you can get machines which use little sealed pods of coffee to save loading in messy coffee grinds to the top, but I prefer the old fashioned method of using a coffee press. With a press then you load in some ground coffee, put in the appropriate amount of boiling water and leave it to stew for around 4 minutes. Then you just pop the top on, and press the plunger down, that uses a filter inside it to push the grinds down to the bottom and separate them from the water, then you can pour it out, add milk and sugar to taste, then enjoy!
Espresso: This is more of an acquired taste. You make espresso by using more coffee, less water, grinding the coffee much finer, and then forcing the water through the grinds under pressure (normal coffee just stews in the water). There is an art to making it right and getting the layer of crema on the top which an authentic shot has, and it takes a lot of practice and skill to get it just right. You have to use a machine to get the pressure for the water, you can find manual or electric ones, or you could use a Moka pot which uses steam to force the water through the grinds. When made right then espresso is a small, intense shot of coffee, full of flavour, and it is often used as a base for the more exotic types of coffee.
Cappuccino: This is one of the most popular drinks made with espresso as the base. You take a shot of espresso which is about a third of the drink, then you add in a third of the drink as heated milk, then the last third is made by frothing up some milk using a device which forces steam into the milk to make it bubble up. You add in the hot milk and espresso, then finish with the frothed milk and maybe some chocolate powder on the top for taste and decoration, and you have a tasty drink to enjoy.
Latte: Have you ever had a milky coffee where you used more milk than coffee? That is what this is, except you use espresso as the first third of the drink, and then heated milk for the rest. As you use espresso for the base then you still get that satisfying creamy taste from having all that milk in it, but you also get a good coffee taste too because usually the milk drowns out the taste when you use normal coffee.
Those are the 4 most popular types of coffee you can find pretty much anywhere, and if you order one of those then at least you know what you are getting and don’t end up with some strange variation which makes you cringe every time you take a sip but cost you a small fortune! Now I’m off to get a Latte – are you coming?
Instead of spending money on expensive coffee at a coffeeshop then you can get a Delonghi EMK6 espresso maker and make your own from the comfort of your own home.
