Shopping For Healthy Food Choices In A Grocery Shop
We all know how hard it can sometimes be to make healthy choices while grocery shopping, and yet shopping for groceries is something that almost everyone does on a regular basis. The tips below may help you to make better food choices while you shop.
1. Don’t shop for groceries when you have an empty stomach.
2. When buying canned foods, such as fruit or tuna, look for projects that use water, not oil or syrup.
3. Read the ingredients with care. Foods that have the words ‘hydrogenated’ or ‘partially hydrogenated’ early in the list of ingredients will pack high amounts of unhealthy trans fatty acids.
4. When buying turkey, look for meat that already has the skin removed. When buying chicken, buy breast meat.
5. Make sure you only buy frozen dinners that are low in sodium, fat, and cholesterol.
6. Calcium is not only found in dairy products. If you love orange juice, start buying the brands that are fortified with calcium.
7. Breads, cereals, and rolls should always be made with whole grains.
8. Cantaloupe makes a deliciously sweet dessert. It is packed with Vitamin C and beta carotene, and you can enjoy an entire half of the melon for just 95 calories!
9. Don’t be tricked by snacks that appear to be healthy, such as yogurt covered raisins. The coating has far more sugar and partially hydrogenated oils then it does actual yogurt. Be sure to read the labels even when a snack appears to be a healthy choice.
Try following these tips on your next shopping trip. The key is reading the package labeling carefully. This may take a bit longer at first, but soon it will become second nature. As you do so, you’ll be getting a good feel for which products are healthy choices and which ones are not. Soon you’ll find so many healthy foods that you really enjoy that it will be easy to walk right past the bad food choices!
